About the exam
The National Essay Olympiad (NESO) differs from mainstream subjects like Mathematics, Science, General Knowledge, English and Computers. It lets students test their language skills and encourages story-telling, making the exam genuinely interesting. Participants must be well-versed with the topics on which they attempt essay writing.
How to participate
- Schools contact the officials of Indian Talent Olympiad to participate; the exam pattern is shared with participating schools and communicated to students.
- NESO is conducted at national level.
- Essay topics are given on the spot, depending on the level and grade of the student — general topics about current affairs or our surroundings are usually preferred.
- It is a good way to test general knowledge on issues happening in and around us — get in touch with your English teacher to know more.
- ITO rewards deserving students topping the Essay Writing Competition with prizes and awards.
Syllabus
The exam builds excellent writing capability from a young age, with topics set per class, age and calibre — personal experiences, important days and dates, current affairs and more. Marks weigh the words and phrases used, description, impeccable grammar, the idea, and the overall presentation of the topic. NESO is a non-conventional exam, but it forms the base of writing skills that matter in every career.
How to prepare
Refer to the essay workbooks offered by Indian Talent Olympiad: they show the topics asked for each class, and let you read widely and form your own points before the exam. Reading different topics from different sources is what enables students to write well in any essay competition — and as the saying goes, the early bird catches the worm.
Essay Olympiad workbook
Workbooks for Classes 1–10 are designed by professionals with sound command over the language and topics. Students learn new ideas, phrases and general information as they read — one of the most productive habits a school student can build. Order workbooks online.
Monthly Olympiad
Monthly NESO tests familiarise students with new topics each month and provide maximum practice before the annual Olympiad. They act as an ice-breaker before the final exam and also help with school essay tests. Those who enroll find the final exam questions easy to attempt because of the continuous exposure — essay writing is a skill built over years of practice, so the earlier you start, the better.
